Day Three

Milngavie to Drymen (12 miles / 19 km) 

The trail begins in the town of Milngavie, quickly leading into the countryside through Mugdock  Country Park. This section is relatively gentle, with peaceful lochs and  rural scenery before reaching the welcoming village of Drymen.

Day Four

Drymen to Balmaha (7 miles / 11 km) 

This shorter stage features a forest walk leading to the ascent of Conic Hill, which offers stunning  views of Loch Lomond. In good weather, the climb is worth the effort. The route descends steeply  into the picturesque village of Balmaha.

Day Five

Balmaha to Rowardennan (8 miles / 13 km) 

A scenic section alternating between shoreline and woodland paths, this stretch has short but  steep climbs and superb views across Loch Lomond. Walkers pass natural beaches, info points,  and the peaceful Cashel area before arriving at the historic Rowardennan Hotel.

Day Six

Rowardennan to Inverarnan (14.7 miles / 23.5 km) 

This is one of the toughest days, with rough and rocky terrain, especially from Inversnaid to the  loch’s head. The route includes Rob Roy’s Cave, waterfalls, and remote bothies before finishing at  the famously atmospheric hotel in Inverarnan.

Day Seven

Inverarnan to Tyndrum (12.5 miles / 20 km) 

The trail follows the River Falloch with waterfalls and chances to spot wild goats. Walkers may  detour into Crianlarich before visiting St Fillan’s Priory and the Lochan of the Lost Sword. The  route ends in the bustling little town of Tyndrum with the famous Green Welly Shop.

Day Eight

Tyndrum to Inveroran (9 miles / 14.5 km) 

This stage follows an old military road through classic Highland scenery with mountain views,  streams, and peaceful woodland. After a stop at Bridge of Orchy, there’s a short climb to Mam Carraigh with panoramic views, finishing at the remote Inveroran Hotel.

Day Nine

 Inveroran to Kingshouse (10 miles / 16 km) 

A wild and remote walk across Rannoch Moor, one of the most exposed yet breathtaking parts of  the trail. In good weather, the moor is unforgettable. The day ends at the refurbished Kingshouse  Hotel, offering views of Buachaille Etive Mor, Scotland’s most photographed mountain.

Day Ten

Kingshouse to Kinlochleven (9 miles / 14 km) 

This dramatic stretch includes the famous Devil’s Staircase—steep but manageable—followed by  a long descent into Kinlochleven. Along the way, enjoy views of the Glencoe mountains and the  hydroelectric works before exploring the quirky gnome-filled village.

Day Eleven

Kinlochleven to Fort William (15.5 miles / 25 km) 

A tough climb out of Kinlochleven leads to a quiet, remote valley with deserted farmsteads and  forested glens. The final stretch into Fort William offers glimpses of Ben Nevis and culminates at  the official end of the West Highland Way on the high street—a triumphant end to nearly 100 miles  of Scottish adventure.
